Refers to the Taíno people, the indigenous inhabitants of Puerto Rico and other Caribbean islands, whose culture and history are deeply intertwined with the El Yunque National Forest (formerly known as Luquillo National Forest). El Yunque National Forest, the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest System, holds immense cultural and ecological importance, and the Taíno people considered the Luquillo Range (where El Yunque is located) sacred for over a thousand years.
