I LOVE this piece! Antique cream pitcher with hand painted barn scene signed by the artist, Ruth Poage of Fletcher, NC. This glazed earthenware pitcher is unmarked but typical of those used in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Purchased at an estate sale.
This brilliantly talented artist has turned this piece of rural history into a stunning folk art piece.
Please notice how the barn is nestled into the lower part of the pitcher. The field then rises on both sides of the barn in a gentle slope, following the curves of the pitcher. Three chickens scurry across the yard. Tiny brush strokes and skillful blending of colors make it very real. Stare hard enough and you can step right into this scene— or so it seems!
Condition is very good for its age. Crazing throughout but no major chips. A couple tiny nicks on the plain unpainted side- not noticeable.
Measures 5.25” at the handle. Mouth is 4” by 2.5.” Base is 3” by 2.5.” Price is negotiable for Reasonable offers. :)
