The world of Tatsumi Hijikata and Ankoku Butoh, photographed in a cold village in Akita.
The original edition, released in 1969, is expensive, but this is the 2009 popular edition simultaneously published in Japan and the United States.

Shuzo Takiguchi (preface), Donald Keene (essay), Yoichiro Miyoshi (poem), and Kazumasa Nagai (book design), who were fascinated by Tatsumi Hijikata at the time, participated. Kazumasa Nagai was also commissioned for the design of the reprint, but he passed away during production.
