Born in Tarrytown, New York, on March 17, 1814, Alburtus Del Orient's "god given" talent as an artist was encouraged early on by his father, John Henri Isaac Browere, a noted sculptor. For the most part self-taught, Browere was exhibiting his paintings in New York's National Academy by the age of eighteen. At age thirty, his work was winning awards at prestigious art exhibitions in New York City.
Moving up the Hudson River to the village of Catskill, Browere supported himself by clerking in a drug store, while in his free time creating memorable works of art inspired by the tales of Washington Irving. Among his best were scenes from the classic American folk tale Rip Van Winkle.
