HISTORY ASPECTS -
The Bristol 192 Belvedere was a British twin-engine, tandem rotor helicopter designed by the Bristol Aeroplane Company. Entering service in the early 1960s, it was the Royal Air Force’s first twin-rotor helicopter. The Belvedere was initially developed for the Royal Navy as a transport and anti-submarine platform, but its role shifted to tactical transport after a decision was made to equip the RAF instead. The helicopter had the capability to carry up to 19 fully equipped troops or a variety of cargo loads, including artillery pieces and vehicles, making it a versatile asset for military operations.
The Belvedere saw combat during the Indonesian Confrontation in the mid-1960s, where it was used by British forces for troop transport, supply runs, and casualty evacuation in the challenging terrain of Borneo. Its ability to operate in dense jungle environments and perform heavy-lift missions underlined its importance in the conflict. It also saw use in Aden (modern-day Yemen), where British forces relied on the helicopter to support operations during the Aden Emergency, transporting soldiers and supplies to remote locations in the mountainous and desert regions.
Though the Bristol Belvedere had a relatively short operational life, being retired in 1969, its unique design and role as a heavy-lift helicopter left a significant impact. It paved the way for future tandem rotor designs like the Boeing CH-47 Chinook, which took on similar roles in later decades. The Belvedere's contribution to military transport operations during a period of transition for the British military makes it a noteworthy chapter in the evolution of military helicopters.
This 1 - 72 scale model perfectly captures the distinctive shape and innovative design of this early British tandem rotor helicopter. A must-have for military aviation enthusiasts, it brings to life the history of a helicopter that played a crucial role in the post-war operations of the RAF.
