Cabbage Patch Kids began as handmade "Little People" dolls created by Xavier Roberts in 1976, inspired by folk artist Martha Nelson Thomas's similar creations. Roberts established BabyLand General Hospital to facilitate the "adoption" of these unique dolls, complete with birth certificates and adoption papers. In 1982, Roberts partnered with Coleco to mass-produce the dolls as Cabbage Patch Kids, sparking massive demand, holiday shopping riots, and a cultural phenomenon that generated billions in sales and expanded into licensed merchandise.
