During the Brittany campaign, the 12th Field Artillery Battalion of the 2nd Infantry Division received experimental ground-mounted T27 4.5" rocket launchers, replacing their usual 105mm howitzers. While somewhat effective, the launcher system's firepower was insufficient to dislodge the enemy. Nevertheless, possessing these weapons enabled them to continue supporting the division during a severe 105mm ammunition shortage. Post-campaign, the battalion returned the experimental weapons along with their field report, leading to the development of the T32 Xylophone launcher system, which doubled the launchers and mounted them on 2-ton trucks.
