Torrey Pine is recognized as critically endangered on the IUCN Red List. Considered the rarest native pine in North America, its populations are vulnerable due to habitat loss, drought, and bark beetle infestations, leading researchers and conservation groups to implement management plans to help ensure its survival.
Torrey Pine is found only along coastal San Diego and on Santa Rosa Islands, offshore from Santa Barbara, California. It thrives in dry, sandy soils and coastal fog, often developing twisted, sculptural forms from wind exposure.
