This is a beautifully carved wooden figure of Fukurokuju, the God of Wisdom and Longevity, from what looks like mahogany. From what we have seen from similar figures, we believe he dates to the 1950’s-1960’s.
Fukurokuju is of Chinese origin, but his Japanese name comes from fuku (happiness), roku (wealth), and ju (longevity). He is known as the god of wisdom and longevity out of the Seven Lucky Gods in Japanese mythology. He is the only member of the Seven Lucky Gods credited with the ability to revive the dead.
He does have one chip and a small crack on the bottom of his clothing (please see pictures). Price based on professional appraisal and reduced due to these flaws. He is an absolutely stunning figure that is very well carved.
Height – 12”
Width – approx. 4”
