This is a P. Lorillard rose leaf chewing tobacco tin from 1878. It is approx 3 1/2x 2" and the engraving is that of a frog holding a compass surrounded by engravings of a ship, flowers, leaves and mushrooms. on the bottom of the lid the engraving reads somers bros. brooklyn n.y. patented sept. 24th and nov 12th 1878. On the back the engraving reads P. lorillard & co rose leaf chewing tobacco. It is nickel plated brass and all the plating is covering the entire tin without flaws. The compass works and the hinging on the box works well and closes snuggly. I cant stress enough what a special piece this is. It is close to 150 years old and while the condition is not perfect, it is exeptional, considering. Any tobacco memorabilia collector will be thrilled to get their hands on this rare piece.
