First edition, first printing hardcover copy of White Dog by Romain Gary (NAL / World Publishing Company, 1970). Memoir of the acclaimed author’s experience unknowingly adopting a dog trained to hate and attack people of color, and his efforts to undo the racist teachings imparted upon the animal. A unique look at society, race and the nature of hate through this interesting lens. Jacket now protected in new (removable) archival sleeve but with tanning, rubbing/scuffing to faces and slight shelf wear around the edges. Boards are straight and clean but with some scuffing along side of spine and with corners bumped. Binding is firm and spine is straight. Some faint staining to outer edges of text block, otherwise all pages are clean and unmarked. See photos for condition.
