Vintage Mexican Clay Rooster. A wonderful clay Rooster from Jalisco, Mexico with vivid bright 'barro betus' glazes. This fun piece was made by Gerardo Ortega. It is signed on the base just next to his left foot (see photograph) 'Ortega (85?) I can't make out the year'. A typical folk art piece from the Ortega Pottery Studio in Santa Cruz de las Huerta, Jalisco, Mexico where most of the extended Ortega family create beautiful colorful ceramic folk art.
This Rooster is very colorful, besides his bright orange base plumage he has a yellow (with red inside) beak and feet with multi colored stylized feathers in blue, green and pink. The Rooster measures about 12" inches tall and almost 6" inches wide & deep, he is in fantastic vintage condition with minimal signs of age. I did try to zoom in on some paint chips.
