To play Hanafuda (Koi Koi): two players are dealt eight cards each, with eight cards placed face-up in the center (the "field"). Players take turns matching a card from their hand to a card in the field of the same month, taking the pair. If no match is possible, a card from the hand is added to the field. A card is then drawn from the deck; if it matches a field card, that pair is also taken. The goal is to collect cards into sets called yaku, which have point values.
