As the sun sets over the Platte River, the dark forms of sandhill cranes, silhouetted against the orange sky, accompany the sounds of their haunting calls as they come to roost on the sandbars of the river. These ancient birds return each spring to the Platte River Valley to feed on the nearby fallow cornfields. After gaining energy during this brief stopover, the cranes will continue their long migration from Texas & the Gulf of Mexico to the far North.
