The threepence coin was a denomination of currency in the United Kingdom and parts of the British Empire, valued at 1/80 of a pound or 1/4 of a shilling before decimalization in 1971.
Originally silver, the coin's composition was changed to brass in 1937 during King George VI's reign and continued in that form into Queen Elizabeth II's reign.
The coin shown features a crowned portcullis design on one side, which was a common motif for the brass threepence.
The twelve-sided brass threepence was demonetized at the end of the decimal transitional period in 1971.
