Back in the days of two-pan balance scales, you needed a set of standard weights to place in one pan to balance what you were weighing in the other pan. Then you could add up the weights you used to get the weight on the item you were weighing. Pharmacists were some of the largest users of these, so they are often called pharmacist’s weights or apothecary weights, but they were used by many others as well. This is a two scruples weight made by H. Trommer of Philadelphia, probably late 1800s or early 1900s. 17mm, brass.
